Before it was Halloween, it was Samhain.
The Celts marked the end of harvest, a time when light fades, and spirits stir.
Celebrated around November 1st to mark the start of the New Year.
On this night, the boundary between worlds grew thin.
Spirits wandered freely ~ ancestors, lost souls, and things better left unnamed.
To hold back the darkness, they lit massive bonfires ~ sacred flames meant to protect and purify.
Offerings of bread, fruit, and milk were left outside homes ~ tokens of respect so spirits would pass by in peace.
Villagers dressed in animal skins and hides, blending in with the night to confuse any wandering spirits.
Over centuries, Samhain merged with All Hallows’ Eve ~ and eventually, Halloween was born.
The veil still thins every year.
Light a candle, honor your ancestors, and listen closely…the old ways whisper still.
